While I was planning my around the world trip I knew that I did not want to "work" the whole trip. I did know that I wanted to do volunteer work at some point though. I had been helping with a homeless mission in downtown Washington DC before I left on my trip, and I knew that there is nothing more humbling then helping people less fortunate then you. While traveling from country to country around the world you will soon realize that we are very fortunate to live in the States, Canada, Australia, Europe, etc. (wherever you might be reading this blog) Extreme poverty is defined by the World Bank by living on less than $1 US Dollar a day. It is estimated that about 1 billion people live on only $1 a day. It is hard to believe that figure when living in a developed nation, but it is the truth!
There are plenty of opportunities to help people around the world on your trip. There are opportunities in South America, Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. These opportunities range from construction, medical work, working in an orphanege, and teaching just to name a few. There are organizations that help place volunteers in different locations depending on what you are looking to do. Universal Giving list a lot of opportunities for travelers like you and me.
