Nha Trang is located in the southern half of Vietnam. I left Hoi An on a bus at 6.30 pm, and didn't arrive in Nha Trang until 7am. I got onto the bus and saw my friend Paola that I meet on the way from Hanoi to Hue. It was pretty cool to travel to the next city with somebody that I knew. It took about 13 hours from Hoi An to Nha Trang, but in reality the trip could be a lot shorter if we didn't stop. Every bus trip the driver stops at a "restaurant" which is somebody's house that has a restaurant with some tables. Usually we'll drive about 4 hours before stopping. We ended up stopping at this restaurant for 45 minutes. After sleeping on and off the whole night we finally arrived in Nha Trang.
The first place we stopped was at the start of the city and called My Hoa (don't stay there). The bus driver stopped and somebody from this hotel got on and said that they had rooms available for cheap and that it was a new hotel. What they didn't tell us is that it is about a 25 minute walk to where the center of town was. Paola and I ended up getting off the bus and putting a deposit down on the room. Paola was meeting another girl named Natalie (who it turned out was on the slow boat with me in Laos) in Nha Trang, but they didn't have a meeting place. So Paola and I walked to the center of town and back and couldn't find her. We walked for about an hour round trip and were sweating so bad! We had made a big mistake by not staying in the center of town. You live and learn! (The next stop the bus makes is in the center of town at the bus stop where all the hotels and restaurants are located. My advice is to get off at the bus stop and then stay in the center of town!).
When we arrived back at our hotel we tried to get our deposit back, but they were going to make us pay for a whole nights stay if we left so we decided to stay there. It was only like $5 US Dollars but that is a lot of money in Vietnam! We emailed Natalie and she met us at the hotel.
There is not a lot of things to do in Nha Trang except hang out at the beach! Which I would love to do on any day. So we headed to the beach at 11:30 am. At 11:30 am there was nobody on the beach! I couldn't believe it. We walked on the beach from our hotel all the way down to where all the action is (25 minute walk) and there were only a couple of tourist on the beach.
It turned out that Paola, who had been living in New Zealand before traveling to SE Asia, had some of her friends in Nha Trang at the same time as we were there. We saw her friends Amy, Damien, and Martin sitting under some umbrellas and we joined them for the day. It turned out they were all from Buenos Aires, Argentina!
The beach is so nice in Nha Trang. The sand is really fine, clean, and the water is pretty warm. There are not too many waves, but it is still fun to hang out around the water. All I did for 2 days was read, lay in the sun, and swim! While you are sitting at the beach there are some locals who do try to sell you things like: books (a copy of the real book), drinks, bracelets, and CRABS! This lady came around our umbrellas and had a pot of crabs that she had cooked. For $1 US Dollar, this lady will crack open whole crab for you and get the meat out and put it on a plate for you. The crab was really good...I couldn't believe it that I was eating crab on the beach in Vietnam!
Later on in the afternoon my new friends from Argentina brought out Mate! I couldn't believe that they had brought Mate on their trip, but they said they can't live without it (I still think Mate is a drug?!!!) So we all hung out and drank mate like we were in Argentina. It turns out that Paola had brought a year supply with her to New Zealand when she left Buenos Aires. While the sun was starting to go down a little bit more and more people starting showing up at the beach! It turns out that the locals only come to the beach really early in the morning or when the sun is going down at night. I had forgot that the Asian culture loves their skin to be white and not tan. So by the time the sun goes down the beach is packed! You can see in the picture above that the lady who sold crabs covers her whole body from head to toe because she is trying to keep her skin covered from the sun.
The night life is pretty low key in Nha Trang. There are some restaurants that are pretty decent. We all ended up eating something that was mix or egg, meat, and sauce?! And then there were promoters on street corners that said there were 2 for 1 drinks at a couple of local bars. When we showed up at the bar they were playing Futbol (soccer) on TV and it turned out to be Boca Jrs vs. River. It was too funny since I was with 3 people from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Nha Trang turned out to be a pretty cool little town. It is a perfect place to chill on the beach for about 2 days and 1 night. Other than that there isn't too much happening here so I would move on after that! I think I lived off $15 US dollars the whole time I was in Nha Trang for two days. That included a place to stay, drinks, and food!
