Outside of Quito, Ecuador there is a monument that has been dedicated to the fact that Ecuador is located in the middle of the earth. This huge shine is at 0 longitude and latitude. This monument is accessible everday of the week, but Sundays is definitely the best day to go. On Sunday afternoons there are 2 or 3 shows where local people are hired to do cultural dances to typcial Ecuadorian music. There are a lot of tourist shops and restaurants surrounding the monument in a plaza that is there for tourists. It is a very cool place and worth checking out.
You will be able to take some pretty cool pictures at this monument that will show you standing in the northern and southern hemisphere at the same time. Afer walking around the monument for some time you can pay a small admissions fee to take an elevator to the top of the monument. It is worth paying to see the view! On the way down you will walk through a museum that explains the history of Ecuador, and the culture that has shaped Ecuador through the years.
The funny part about this monument is that it is actually not located at 0 longtitude. This monument was built before GPS and is very close to 0 latitude, but in reality is not exactly on it. There is the "real" 0 longtitude that is located within walking distance from the monument. At this site they have experiments set up for you to try to see if there are differences in the flow of water in the northern and southern hemisphere. You will not hear anybody tell you that the monument that was built for tourist is not located in the right place.
